at the Ryman Auditorium. The Ryman is holy ground as the former home to the Grand
Ole Opry. Today, the intimate theater hosts acts including country stalwarts, “American
Idol” alumni and even stand-up comedians. If you are looking for some completely new
sounds, indie rock bands regularly play The Basement East on Woodland Street.
Nashville’s handcrafted cocktails go hand in hand with the city’s music scene. Skilled
bartenders in the city’s hippest bars and speakeasies mix sensuous concoctions that
burst with flavor. Perhaps the hottest ticket in town is the Tiki bar Pearl Diver. Once an
automobile garage, this bar offers tropical libations, some of which are served aflame. On
the last Sunday of each month, guests can attend a luau at Pearl Diver. Another popular
destination among locals is Rosemary, in the Five Points neighborhood of East Nashville.
Finding this establishment can be a challenge because it looks like a bungalow from
the outside. There is no signage, simply a bouncer on the porch. Once inside, patrons
are immersed in the past. Sepia-toned antique photos and smoky mirrors line the walls
overlooking a lounge with velvet furniture and a bar where adroit mixologists craft their
beverages in scientific beakers.
he speakeasy is a hot trend in most cities, and Nashville is no exception.
Paying homage to Prohibition days, The Patterson House is a converted
Victorian mansion complete with hushed velvet curtains. It offers a full menu,
but most venture there for the Gatsbyesque cocktails mixed by bartenders
in Roaring ’20s attire. Also paying homage to Prohibition is Attaboy in East Nashville,
which lends a personal touch to the speakeasy. Instead of bringing you a formal cocktail
menu, your server will gather information about your preferred spirits and report back
to the bartender, who will mix up a drink to please your palate. Vodka drinkers, beware:
Attaboy has no vodka on the premises, since this liquor was not widely available
