ARTS
word, lectures, comedy and unplugged folk
throughout the week. Hearty English fare is
on offer at either the casual Green & Fortune
or the fancier rotunda.

The Fridge, Dubai
most international stars play Dubai at one
point or another, but for local music, try
the Fridge. that venue is right at home
along the galleries of the thriving al Quoz
neighborhood, and it cultivates an industri-al-chic vibe while preserving a welcoming
warmth. the programming is eclectic—the
main requirement is that the acts must be
based and living in the United arab Emirates.
on any given night, you may stumble upon
anything from post-rockers Fox Hill V to the
Dubai chamber orchestra and the Dubai
Vocal Ensemble, a Filipino choir performing
folk songs.

Théatre Lino Ventura, Nice
as far as cultural scenes go, Nice is often
overshadowed by its neighbor cannes,
which is known for one thing (and it’s
not music). when a certain film festival
hits in may, the beach resort goes into
overdrive—there’s even a pop-up Silencio,
David Lynch’s exclusive Paris nightclub.
the rest of the year, music-loving cannois
head over to nearby Nice to sample pop,
Lino Ventura, a pleasant 40-minute drive
away. Named after the late tough-guy ac-
tor, the welcoming venue hosts a variety of
concerts for fewer than 20 euros. You may
catch classic reggae ensemble Steel Pulse,
but the real focus is on quality French-
language artists. why not take a chance on
pop/rapster Féfé or idiosyncratic singer-
songwriter jean-Louis murat? just don’t
forget to feast on an actual salade Niçoise
before the show.

Rio Scenarium, Rio de Janeiro
music is not a spectator sport in rio de
janeiro. Sure, you can sit back and enjoy,
but the best way to experience the city is
to dance it. For about 60 years, cariocas
(as the locals call themselves) have been
flocking to the Lapa district to move to
the sounds of samba, forró and choro. rio
Scenarium offers all that—from both Djs
and live bands—but it’s that decor that
makes it stand out. rather than your regular
club’s stainless steel and neon, the three
floors look like an antiques store, packed
to the gills with knickknacks and oddball
furniture. it’s a miracle there’s space left
to dance—and yet dance you will. Don’t
worry: a bar sells drinks and snacks for convenient refueling.
