JWM MAGAZINE 12 JWMARRIOTT.COM
n October 1984, the first JW Marriott hotel
opened in Washington, D.C.— a gift from a
son to his father. Bill Marriott could think of
no better way to thank the man who started it
all: the company’s founder, J. Willard Marriott.
A true entrepreneur who expressed genuine
affection both for his guests and associates, J. Willard
Marriott had a rather radical (for the time) concept — that
treating guests exceptionally starts with the way we take
care of our associates. The idea endures as the guiding
force behind every one of more than 80 JW hotels around
the world. As we like to say, That’s The JW Treatment.
As we celebrate JW’s 33rd anniversary, we are more
energized than ever to embrace the ethos of our proud
family heritage. Part of that endeavor means celebrating
our associates by enriching them with engaging experiences.
It also means seeking luxury partners that share our values,
such as Champagne Taittinger, the only Grande Marque
Champagne still owned and operated by its namesake family. And when the stars align, it means bringing these ideas
together, like the way we brought some of our top JW wine
associates to the Taittinger vineyards for an unforgettable
immersion. Journey with them to Reims, France, the world’s
Champagne capital, for a sparkling revelation on how it all
unfolds. So the next time you order a bottle of bubbly at a
JW hotel, the experience might be made even more
memorable by what the sommelier learned at the vineyard.
If French wine country isn’t your idea of paradise, this
issue offers other destinations that may well be, including
the mountainous and forested Phu Quoc region of Vietnam,
an unspoiled getaway of pristine beaches and quaint fishing villages. The JW MARRIOTT PHU QUOC EMERALD
BAY RESORT & SPA is vaulting to the top of my must-see
list, as this beautiful resort, designed by award-winning
interior designer Bill Bensley, offers a whimsical twist on
university culture that expresses our guests’ passion for
learning in a way that is utterly unique.
From top: Artful
travelers in Phu Quoc;
JW Marriott wine
associates and guests
in Reims, France.
Finally, while I hope my missives might elicit a grin,
I certainly don’t expect them to inspire a belly laugh —
although if they did, your health might just get a boost.
For some surprising revelations on the benefits of comic
relief, turn to this issue’s well-being story on page 42.
Which brings me back again to The JW Treatment, and
our firm belief that exceptional service always starts with
a warm smile.
